How Do The Move Over Laws Work?

The Move Over laws are designed to create a safer environment for law enforcement officers, emergency response personnel, and roadside workers. The law requires you to Move Over by changing lanes to clear the way for the vehicle on the roadside.

This law applies to any stationary vehicle flashing emergency or warning lights by the roadside. These vehicles include, but are not limited to;

  • Law enforcement vehicles
  • Firefighters vehicles
  • Ambulances
  • Stationary surveillance vehicles displaying amber warning lights.
  • Tow trucks

It is a general rule that when you come across any of the above-mentioned vehicles, you should immediately slow down and Move Over your lane to create space between you and the stationary vehicle. Statistics show that close to 200 roadside workers lose their lives each year in the line of duty. Many of these deaths could be avoided if you read and observe the Move Over Laws.
